Student Representatives Attend the Diocesan Blue Mass

On September 29th, which is the Feast of Saints and Archangels; Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the 23rd annual Diocesan Blue Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Parish.  This special Mass is dedicated to honor and pray for those men and women who have died in the line of duty, or, are currently serving in law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services - our first responders of Southern New Jersey.

Mrs. Rhea, along with eight of our students from St. Cecilia’s, joined students from other Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Camden to attend the service. Bishop Dennis Sullivan, joined by Coadjutor Bishop Joseph Williams concelebrated the Mass, with many of our diocesan clergy present.

Bishop Sullivan’s Homily focused on Saint Michael the Archangel, known as the protector from evil.  He also recognized the human evil that is occurring more frequently in our communities and in the world in general. Bishop Sullivan then        called us to prayer, asking St. Michael to defend us in battle.

Also, during Mass, a bell was rung 38 times for those who have died in one of the service professions during the past year. “When you hear the sound of the bell, let it ring gratitude into your hearts for their public service. Let the echo of the bell take you to God, who we believe gives eternal rest. They are not forgotten,”  -  Bishop Sullivan

Bishop Sullivan then invited all students in our Catholic Schools who have a parent in public service, whether a police officer, state trooper, first responder or firefighter to come forward to the altar and be recognized. The number of students in who came forward for the group photo was remarkable and inspiring that our community has so many parents who serve our public.

The men and women in all their uniforms of “blue”, along with the flags they carried, the bag pipes played, the ringing bells, and prayers that were offered,  left a lasting impression on each student  who was in attendance.  It was a beautiful morning of remembrance, recognition and thanksgiving.
